Top 5 Protein Powders for Building Muscle

You finish your workout, now it’s time for that protein shake, but which should you choose?

If you think they are all the same, you couldn’t be more wrong. Some protein powders are junk, made in China using fillers, artificial flavors and the cheapest ingredients possible with the lowest quality protein.

The problem is it can be hard to figure out which ones are good and which to leave on the shelf. Luckily we have done the legwork and found the top 5 protein powders on the market market. Before we get to that though let’s go over some things you should know about protein Build muscle fast

Benefits of Protein

If you don’t already know protein is the building blocks of muscle, so you better be sure you’re getting enough protein in order to build muscle and get stronger.

Some key advantages to a good protein powder include:

  • Enhanced muscle growth
  • Control cravings
  • Increased strength
  • Speed recovery
  • Healthy snack substitute
  • Convenience
  • Faster absorption for post-workout protein
  • Increase strength and lower body fat

Different Protein Powders

Whey Protein

Whey protein is by far the most common of all forms of protein powder. This is a fast digesting form of protein powder that is good for a post workout shake. It is also full of Essential Amino Acids and three branched chain amino acids that help build muscle.

Casein Protein

Casein protein is the slow digesting or what some may call time released protein. It may be a slower worker than whey protein, but it can work deliver amino acid to your muscle for up to 8 hours. This is why it is the protein of choice to take before bed, one shake gives you protein all night.

Soy protein

Soy protein powder is the protein of choice for vegetarians and vegans. As the name implies it derives its protein from the soy plant rather than using animal protein. Not that flavor is the end all be all but this one is the least appealing flavor wise.

Egg Protein

Egg proteins are the highest standard of protein, they are loaded with Essential Amino Acids and high quality protein scores. These rank between whey and casein in terms of digestibility. Egg protein powders are generally more expensive than the others as well.

Milk Protein

Milk proteins are dried milk that most of the fat and carbohydrates have been removed. These are a blend of 20% whey and 80% casein protein. This one that you would obviously want to avoid if you are lactose intolerant.

Blended proteins

Bended proteins are, as the name implies, a blend of different proteins. Generally, they use a quick digesting protein like whey along with a slow digesting protein like casein.

Top 5 Protein Powders for Building Muscle

We have looked at all the available protein powders out there, and there are a lot, and we have put together this list of the top 5 protein powders on the market for building muscle.

1. ProteinSeries 100% Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate

Best protein powder

In first place we have a seriously incredible protein powder from Transparent Labs. This bad boy is so pure and so top notch we couldn’t put it anywhere besides at the top of the list.

This protein powder is made from 100% grass-fed and hormone free cow whey to give you the most natural and highest quality whey possible, and it is sourced from New Zealand. We like that it isn’t sourced from China or Malaysia, a lot of companies have their products made their so they can make it as cheaply as possible and the product can end up very sub-standard.

This protein powder gives you 28 grams of protein in just one 32-gram scoop. Meaning almost the entire scoop is protein, all but 4 grams. That is a crazy high protein and easily one of the highest and best in the entire industry.

Also you won’t find any artificial colors, dyes, preservatives or sweeteners in this one. It is as pure as you can get when it comes to protein powder.

Pro’s

  • Made from grass-fed cow whey
  • No artificial sweeteners or dyes
  • One of the highest protein to weight ratios in the industry
  • Sourced from New Zealand
  • 28 grams of protein per scoop
  • No sugar, no carbs, and low in cholesterol

Con’s

  • Not cheap – you can save 10% with coupon code TL10 though
  • Only available on the company website

2 Optimum Nutrition Platinum Hydrowhey

Best protein powder

Coming is second we have another really nice protein from the guys at Optimum Whey. Platinum Hydrowhey.

For this protein they hydrolyze the whey protein isolates to make them smaller so they can be more easily absorbed by the body.  This make the delivery even faster for your post workout shake.

Platinum Hydrowhey contains 30 grams of protein per serving and is loaded with muscle building BCAA’s as well.

This one also doesn’t have any lactose, sugar or even cholesterol which is nice and they even added digestive enzymes to make it superior in terms of fast digestibility.

Pro’s

  • Superior digestibility
  • Loaded with BCAA’s
  • Hydrolyzed for fast delivery
  • 30 grams of protein per serving

Con’s

3 Pro Jym by Jym

Best protein powder

Next we have Pro Jym by Jym Supplements. Jym supplements are designed by Dr. Jim Stopanni and all of his supplements are pretty good, this one is no exception.

This one is a bit different than the last two in that it is a blend of proteins. Pro Jym uses whey, casein, egg and milk proteins for a true blend. This one is on the lower end delivering 24 grams of protein per scoop, but it is pretty high quality.

They make sure you know they didn’t use protein spiking like some companies might (no one on this list though). Their ingredients are mostly natural aside from an artificial sweetener.

Overall it may not be perfect but it is still a good product that has really good reviews and to be honest you can’t go wrong with this if you choose to try it.

Pro’s

  • Blend of proteins for longer protein release
  • Good reviews
  • Reputable name

Con’s

  • Only 24 grams of protein per scoop
  • High cost per scoop
  • Only available at bodybuilding.com

4 Platinum ISO Whey by MuscleTech

Best protein powder

Coming in fourth place on our list of top 5 protein powders that build muscle is Platinum 100% ISO Whey by MuscleTech. This is another really nice premium product.

This one uses a filtration system to remove lactose, ash, and fat leaving you nice pure protein fractions. This makes for superior mixability, drinkability and a higher quality of protein than you would find in your average protein powder.

This one may be the best out of the bunch in terms of taste so if you are big on taste this could be one for you. Taste is something we really don’t put much value in when it comes to supplements, we go by the effectiveness of the product. If a product tastes really good they usually had to skimp on something in the product or load it with artificial flavors. This one uses sucralose for its flavoring. It is still pretty good though if you can get past that.

Pro’s

  • Highly mixable
  • Pure protein fractions
  • Good taste
  • Good reviews

Con’s

  • Uses artificial flavoring
  • Not cheap (none of these are cheap though)

5 Cor-Performance Whey by Cellucor

top protein powder

Coming in fifth on our list is Cor-Performance Whey by Cellucor. This is another one that is well known for its flavor and of course it uses sucralose (artificial sweetener).

It has really good customer reviews, most of which are based on taste. Cor-Performance Whey has 25 grams of protein per scoop, that is a bit lower than we like to see, it also has the highest amount of cholesterol on the list at 35 mg.

Overall this looks like one that people really like, but it is not as good as a product as the ones above it on this list. It is also the least expensive on the list and it shows. Just not as high of a quality as the others.

Pro’s

  • Fairly inexpensive
  • Tastes good

Con’s

  • Higher in cholesterol
  • Uses artificial sweetener
  • 25 grams per scoop
